"For the message
of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us
who are being saved it is the power of God.”
~ 1 Corinthians
1:18
The Power of
the Cross shows up in my sorrow.
“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves
no regret…” ~2 Corinthians 7:10
One of the responsibilities of the Holy Spirit is the conviction of
sins. Oswald Chambers in his devotional My Utmost For His Highest
has said, “The marvels of conviction of sin, forgiveness, and
holiness are so interwoven that it is only the forgiven man who is
the holy man, he proves he is forgiven by being the opposite to what
he was, by God’s grace. Repentance always brings a man to this
point: I have sinned. The surest sign that God is at work is when a
man says that and means it. Anything less than this is a remorse for
having made blunders, the reflex action of disgust at himself.” It
is true remorse and sorrow that leads to repentance and salvation.
(Read 2 Corinthians 7:8-13)
Paul says, “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation
and leaves no regret…” (7:10) Sorrow over sin leads me to repent
which means to do an “about face” and go in the other direction.
Repentance opens the door of salvation and accepts the gift of the
cross.
Question: When the Spirit
convicts you of sin does it break your heart and bring with it a
genuine Godly sorrow that causes you to do an “about face” in
authentic repentance or have you become calloused and cold to the
effects of your sin to the One who died for you?
Examine yourself and see if you have forgotten how to be sorry.
